Normally a peaceful place of calm, this labyrinth walk mirrored my inner conflict.
Its pronouncements were not calm. I was not calm. The agitation was pronounced and visceral, verging on combative…. but against who or what?
The insights are self-explanatory, so let’s get to it…
Do you suffer from confirmation bias?
Do you only seek the counsel of those who agree with you?
Who do you go to for guidance, and under what circumstances?
WHY?
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), Confirmation Bias is “the tendency to look for information that supports, rather than rejects, one’s preconceptions, typically by interpreting evidence to confirm existing beliefs while rejecting or ignoring any conflicting data.”
In layman’s terms, it means that when there is information that aligns with what you believe, you are more likely to attest to its accuracy, while dismissing any evidence that differs from your beliefs.
Do you believe that you generally have the best and right answer
or
Do you have the humility to recognize that you don’t have all the answers?
Do you understand why it is that we are in community together?
It is the most liberating feeling in the world when each of us comes to a place of understanding and accepting that we are not perfect. We don’t have all the answers, and even more importantly: WE DON’T HAVE TO.
We are allowed to make mistakes, learn and grow.
